Where We Find Refuge
I spent a lot of time thinking about our relationship to land. About reciprocity, healing and the gratitude I have for the land and the gifts of nature. What's my part? How can art and sustainability play a part? And what consciousness is necessary for sustaining humans on Mother Earth?
Many scholars believe we're living through the third industrial resolution, a techno revolution. Future worlds will be fueled by AI and technology that will reshape the way we live, work, play and even think.
In my Where We Find Refuge series, I visually search for a way to heal myself and the Earth. I create dream like photos of man-made and natural spaces as I unpack the intersection of humanity, the Earth and what it means to move beyond the damage and grief in order to step into healing.
Using a Holga 120 film camera, I layer multiple exposures on one negative in search for a resolution to the complex and interwoven relationships humans have with nature. The hauntingly beautiful images dive into the inner and out landscapes of what it means to live in a modern world full of wonderful technology and conveniences and still be a part of nature.
There's a resolution in the stillness of the images that I'm searching for, one that can only be found in the willingness to seek. Can the answers be right in front of us? Is it as imple as spending time in nature? Or your backyard or a park and see what answers come up?
New science shows connecting to nature has miraculous health benefits of lowering stress, inflammation and blood pressure while also inceasing cells that fight off disease and illness. As we quickly build our modern world can we also quickly build a reciprocity with nature? One that finds in healing ourselves, we also heal the planet.
