In 2016, my capstone class brought the Before I Die… project to St. Louis with the permission of artist Candy Chang for their final project. This international art movement installs giant chalkboards in public spaces. My students created a community dialogue about environmental issues with the prompt, “Before I die, I will help nature by___.”
People walking by could pick up a piece of chalk and share their innermost feelings in a very public space. Through this project, my students learned to work with the community on a large scale art installations and develop stronger voices in their communities.
This project was made possible by the students of the Art Institute of St. Louis, City of Maplewood, Artist Candy Chang and a generous grant from Home Depot.
